Heads held high in cup defeat
Herts Senior Cup 1st Round
Tuesday 1st November 2016
Hertford Town 1(0) Kings Langley 2(1)
Two goals in the space of four minutes either side of half-time, condemned the Blues to a Herts Senior Cup defeat that they hardly deserved. A largely experimental and inexperienced Blues team gave Southern League Premier Division side, Kings Langley, a good run for their money and had they enjoyed a little more luck in front of goal, they might well have pulled off an unlikely victory?
Apart from the two defensive lapses, the Blues coped well with the visitors attacks – restricting them to only one other shot on target – and had no fewer than eleven shots of their own on target. When a well-deserved goal did arrive, it was unfortunately too late to save the tie.
Blues manager, Gavin Kelsey, opted to retain only three players from the previous Saturday’s line-up, taking the opportunity to rest key players and give valuable experience to members of the Blues’ thriving U25 Development Team. And, given that many of the team hadn’t played together before, they put in a praiseworthy performance. Steve Tutalamo, making his debut up front, was a constant threat to the Langley defence and could count himself a little unlucky not to have scored on two or three occasions.
The visiting custodian, Danny Boness, was by far the busier of the two keepers and pulled off at least three excellent saves to deny the Blues a goal that might have made all the difference. As it was, the Blues had only Phil Lowen’s impressive injury-time finish to show for their efforts. Combining cleverly with Brett O’Connor on the right-hand side of the box, Phil drove low into the far bottom corner of the goal from fifteen yards out.
As disappointing as it was to lose the tie, there were a lot of positives to be taken from the performance, further emphasising the Blues’ strength-in-depth.
