Jack heads Blues into the second round!
Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Cup
Tuesday 6th September 2016
Hertford Town 1(0) Cockfosters 0(0)
A brilliant Jack Bartlett header from a Lee Roberts corner was ultimately all that separated the two teams in this engaging and entertaining Dudley Latham Memorial Cup tie. The visitors, Cockfosters, are a well-organised, skillful and pacey side and it is a testament to the strength of the Blues’ current squad that manager Gavin Kelsey was able to make six changes to the team that defeated Berkhamsted at the weekend, and still emerge victorious.
Dan Palmer was given his debut at the heart of the Blues’ defence alongside the more experienced Jack Bartlett, and they could both be proud of their performances. Although Cockfosters played their part in a very good game, they were mostly restricted to long-range efforts and, in fact, Reece Buck in the Blues goal was only called upon to make one save of note.
In truth the margin of victory could very easily have been much more comfortable. Tautis Poniskaitis, the visitors’ custodian, made a string of good saves, the best of which were to deny close-range efforts from Mark Summers (twice) and Tommy Wade. It was largely due to his sterling performance that the game was goal-less at half-time and the result was in the balance.
In the end, though, justice was probably served with Jack Bartlett’s fine header and the Blues can now look forward to a second round home tie against Oxhey Jets.
