Three more points in the bag

This enthralling match saw the Blues pick up three more valuable points ahead of their season-defining clash with league leaders London Colney this coming Saturday. Any thoughts, though, that they were easily come by – against a team battling to avoid relegation – would be wildly wide of the mark. Having taken an early lead, the Blues were forced to work hard to hang on to their advantage for the remainder of the game.
Possession was hotly contested throughout the entire ninety minutes and neither side was ever able to settle into a rhythm. There were very few chances for either team but, although the visitors’ performance belied their lowly league status, the Blues, on balance, just about deserved their victory.
The only – and ultimately decisive – goal came in the sixth minute when defender Jay Lovell got his head to Ricky Light’s free kick from out on the right flank, and buried the ball in the back of the net from ten yards out/
Moments later one-nil might easily have become two-nil when Ed Taylor and Ricky Light combined well up the left to set up a chance for Mark Summers, but his left-footed strike unfortunately grazed the wrong side of the far post.
After that near miss, there followed a midfield battle in which both sides worked extremely but, with both defences dominant, there was very little goalmouth action. Blues custodian Jamie Jackson was required to make only one save of any note and, for the Blues, only Tommy Wade’s second half volley over the bar came near to doubling the Blues’ tally.
The three points were never really in doubt, however, and the Blues will now visit league leaders London Colney looking to pull off a double over their opponents and, in doing so, reduce their lead at the top of the table to just two points.
