Following London Colney’s annual meeting, they voted to decline promotion to the Bostik League (previously Ryman North). Based on this decision, the FA extended the invite to Hertford Town and following a meeting with the management team, we accepted.

In an interview with the Mercury, Gavin Kelsey had the following to say:

The club is set up for the step up. Our crowds improved by 55 per cent last season which is fantastic – the squad is there and we have proved in previous seasons we can compete with teams that level. We are all really looking forward to it. It’s come as a surprise in the sense that you didn’t think you were going up and have another season in the Spartan. Everyone is buzzing, everyone has got a smile on their face and the hard work has started already.

First things first, we’ve had to re-arrange friendlies because there are conflicts like the Bowers & Pitsea game, which has been cancelled because they are in the same league. The players we have been speaking to doesn’t really change – there are now probably a couple we will target from a higher league, but apart from that the squad is there. We perhaps need just a little more experience, but some of the new players we have brought in have got that. The preparation of pre-season was already there as I like to start early.

Club chairman, Pete Sinclair added the following:

Everyone at the club is delighted to be back in the Ryman after a gap of 15 years and it’s fully deserved following a positive campaign under Gavin Kelsey. A second placed finish would have been enough to see Hertford Town promoted in the majority of seasons so we are confident that this existing squad is more than capable of making the step up. With an average attendance of 251 last season, we have a huge following. It’s a club that deserves to be playing at a higher level and this is great news for all the players, staff, volunteers, supporters and the town as a whole.
