Two coaches full of noisy, expectant Blues fans left West Street on Saturday to enjoy the 2-hour trip to Suffolk where we would play our first game in this year’s FA Vase competition against Thurlow Nunn side, Stowmarket Town.
Both players and fans were in high spirits as we left the coaches to enter Stowmarket’s Greens Meadow ground.
The game started in frenetic fashion with Leigh Rose and skipper Sam Ruff all firing shots at the home side’s ‘keeper before Jordon Watson turned a defender on the edge of the box before placing a shot into the bottom corner on 18mins.
He ran behind the goal where the Stable End faithful were watching, to celebrate with the fans just as a pitchside barrier gave way! The bemused fans did their very best to reattach the fencing before the game got back underway. Many more chances followed but we took a 1-0 lead into the break.
It wasn’t a lead that was to last long as Stowmarket equalised straight after the interval with many fans missing the goal as they filed back out of the clubhouse. The away support were by now in full flow and raucously welcomed further goals from Tyler Hatherly (49), Leigh Rose (57) and Lou Rose (60). We couldn’t find an official attendance but it was around the 120 mark.
See the match page for photos of the day.
We now turn our attention to Tuesday night and another cup competition in which we can add to last season’s silverware when we visit London Colney in The Dudley Latham Memorial Cup.
On Saturday, we’ll be celebrating Non-League Day with a visit to local rivals St. Margaretsbury when we return back to league action.
