A slightly cooler day for the boys to play in this week but the temperature was raised by the opposition. A local derby is never a friendly affair but a visit to our higher ranked neighbours was always going to be competitive . . . and so it was to prove.
The Blues started with a strong line-up including two new trialists. New signings Anstead & Ricketts also started alongside the returning campaigners Wade, Summers, Donovan, Elliott, Charles, Campbell & Brown. Some changes have seen Elliott move to right-back, Donovan to left-back and Wade reprising his role from last season at centre-back.
The game surprisingly started at break-neck speed given the muggy heat on the day with both teams tough in the tackle and in the air contesting every challenge. Ware took the lead with their 1st shot on The Blues goal of any note but MOTM Lewis Donovan equalised with a cool finish through the ‘keepers’ legs following a great cross field ball from the right hand side. The 2nd half saw wholesale changes for Hertford Town with only Ricketts and Donovan remaining on the pitch. Ware took advantage and The Blues conceded an own goal and a converted penalty before debut striker Chris Ramsey scored a belter from the corner of the Ware box after dancing past two defenders. Most of the travelling fans missed the goal as they were all watching a Red Kite fly overhead! It’s still pre-season for the fans too and they also need minutes under belts to get up to full match fitness.
